Today, we acknowledge that we are on the land of the Chitimacha, Choctaw, Tunica-Biloxi, Houma, and other native peoples. They have lived on this land since time immemorial, and we honor them. Many of these people were dispossessed from their land through violence and genocide. Additionally, we acknowledge that the city of New Orleans was built on stolen land by Africans who endured forced migration and were enslaved.
However, we’d like to go beyond acknowledging this land and native communities, as words without action are empty. During your time here, we encourage you to learn more about the histories and cultures of these communities, past and present. And beyond this week, take care of your land, air, and water, and support the rights and sovereignty of Native peoples. We have provided some resources for you here, but this is only a beginning.
